Book Banter S3 EP 118: Robert Hilliard Interview

* Possible Trigger Warning *

There is a discussion of slavery and the treatment of black Americans during the American Civil War Era and how it pertains to Robert Book, In Freedom's Shadow.

Hello My Happy People,

Today Dianne is bringing you her chat with author Robert Hilliard. His latest book, In Freedom's Shadow, is an exciting historical espionage thriller based on what is believed to be the true story of John Scobell. There is much speculation around the accounts of the heroics written to have been performed by Scobell, Dianne and Robert discuss the challenges of writing accurate historical fiction when the facts are hard to verify. Robert does an amazing job of taking available information and weaving it into a fascinating and engaging story that captivates the imagination and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.

While Robert may be taking his first step into the world of fiction books, he has decades of experience as a professional journalist to back up his new author endeavors. Robert spent more than three decades writing on sports, history, and the great outdoors.  He began his professional writing career working as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, but that is not the only publication to feature his work. His articles have appeared in Pennsylvania Wildlife, Upland Almanac, and Pittsburgh History Magazine.

Robert also has the notable distinction of having not just one, but three articles in the Baseball, Basketball, and Pro Football Halls of Fame. With his work having received this kind of notoriety, it is easy to understand why he was asked to contribute to his first book project, Rivers of Destiny, a history anthology. However, it would be a decade before his next book project.

In 2012, Robert released A Season on the Allegheny, a detailed account of a year spent hunting in the Allegheny National Forest. Even with another well received publication to his credit, Robert would wait another decade to publish his first fiction novel. In Freedom’s Shadow is the story of John Scobell, and escaped slave who becomes a spy for the Union to help end the U.S. Civil War. Robert brings to life a new and exciting twist on the traditional espionage tale that is based on actual events. To find out more just click on the purple microphone to go listen now.
